Blackjack

Blackjack online:

Blackjack, also known as 21, is one of the most popular and widely played card games in casinos. It’s a comparing card game played between the player(s) and a dealer, and the goal is to have a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer’s hand, without exceeding it.

Basic Rules of Blackjack

  1. Card Values

    • Number cards (2-10) are worth their face value.
    • Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 points each.
    • Aces can be worth 1 or 11 points, depending on what benefits the player’s hand.
  2. Objective

    • The aim is to get a hand total of 21 or as close to 21 as possible without going over (busting).
    • Players compete only against the dealer, not against other players.
  3. Game Setup

    • Blackjack is usually played with one or more decks of 52 cards.
    • At the start, each player and the dealer receive two cards:
      • Players’ cards are typically dealt face up.
      • The dealer has one card face up (known as the "upcard") and one card face down (known as the "hole card").
  4. Player's Turn

    • Players can make the following decisions:
      • Hit: Take another card to increase the hand value.
      • Stand: Keep the current hand and end the turn.
      • Double Down: Double the original bet, take one additional card, and then stand.
      • Split: If the first two cards are of equal value (e.g., two 8s), the player can split them into two separate hands, with an additional bet for the second hand.
      • Surrender: Some casinos allow players to forfeit half of their bet and end their turn if they believe their hand is weak (usually only available as the first decision).
    • Players continue hitting until they stand or bust (exceed 21).
  5. Dealer's Turn

    • After all players have completed their turns, the dealer reveals the hole card.
    • The dealer must follow strict rules:
      • Must hit if the hand is 16 or lower.
      • Must stand if the hand is 17 or higher (in most cases, the dealer stands on both soft 17 and hard 17).
  6. Winning and Payouts

    • If a player’s hand is closer to 21 than the dealer’s without busting, the player wins.
    • If the player and the dealer have the same hand total, it’s a push (tie), and the player’s bet is returned.
    • A blackjack (an Ace and a 10-point card on the first two cards) pays 3:2 (e.g., a $10 bet wins $15).
    • A regular win pays 1:1 (e.g., a $10 bet wins $10).
    • If the player busts, they lose immediately, even if the dealer later busts.
    • If the dealer busts, all remaining players win.

Strategies in Blackjack

  1. Basic Strategy

    • Players use a set of predefined actions (e.g., when to hit, stand, double down, or split) based on the player’s hand total and the dealer’s upcard.
    • Basic strategy reduces the house edge to as low as 0.5% when followed correctly.
  2. Card Counting

    • Some advanced players use card counting to track the ratio of high to low cards remaining in the deck.
    • Card counting can give players an advantage, but it requires sharp focus and is discouraged by most casinos.
